desert rose

In his Desert Rose series, Naifeh begins with actual gypsum roses, or clusters of them, which occur naturally in all of the major deserts of the world. These mineral deposits develop over time according to the kinds of mathematical algorithms that define the universe. Naifeh then uses computer software to model and simplify these forms, producing designs that are printed in 3D printers. The results are sculptures that combine the geometry at the core of the timeless physical world and the geometry that is at the core of our most cutting-edge technology.
